How do you keep decisions and changes under control?

Give each choice a scope, an owner and a deadline before it affects the work.

Set the baseline before comparing changes

Keep the current plans, scope, allowances and selections together with version dates. A proposed change only has a clear meaning when the team knows what it replaces. Resolve conflicting drawings and written instructions before anyone assumes which one governs.

Sequence selections by their consequences

Start with decisions that affect layouts, structure, utilities, openings and other work. Then coordinate cabinetry, lighting, materials and installation details. Hillary and the construction team can discuss these relationships early, with responsibilities and deliverables defined for the project.

Review cost and schedule together

For a proposed change, ask what is being added or removed, what work must be redone, which orders or trades are affected, the pricing basis and the schedule consequence. A material price difference alone may not represent the full impact. Document the approval process in the project agreement.

Keep one decision record

Record the choice, supporting reference, responsible person, required approval and effective date. Make superseded selections clear. Photos and messages can support a decision, but they should not leave the team guessing whether something was approved or merely discussed.

Protect the experience of building

Use regular reviews to surface decisions before they become urgent. If priorities change, revisit scope and investment together. The goal is a home that reflects your life with a record the team can execute, not a promise that a complex project will never encounter a change.
